One of the most common questions for novice Unity game designers (or anyone who doesn’t have budget to spare), is where to find good assets to use for free, legally.
There are a few good places to find such assets:
- The first is naturally the Unity asset store itself. You can find many useful Free items on the store, however they can be hard to search out, so I present two options:
- CodeMonkey compiles a monthly list of recent high quality free assets from the store, on his Youtube channel. He also does a lot of super useful free tutorials!
- I also keep a list of assets I find useful and frequently update it as I find additional gems. Access it by clicking here

- CGTrader.com provides models. You’ll generally want to select items that have a ‘fbx’ option in the ‘3D Model formats’, otherwise you’ll need to export them from modelling software yourself.
To find free items, search for the thing you want and then select the ‘Free’ checkbox on the results screen
Alternatively, spend many many hours looking at every single free item they list by clicking here - Polyhaven specializes in Free HDRI’s, they also have some really good free models
- Free sound assets can be found on Bluezone-Corporation and the rather awesome mixkit.co which lists sounds, videos, music and icons.
- There are also regular free items from Daz3D, but be warned, these rarely work alone – often they will ask for purchase of an ‘interactive license’, so do be careful
