We’ve been working on a game for a while now but it’s largely been secretive, not intentionally but because we have not settled on a name with which to present the project publicly.
The whole team has ideas, but today I decided to use ChatGPT for inspiration to finally settle our name. Here’s how it went…
First off – ChatGPT is amazing – as is the fact I can use it for free. It’s able to understand some very complex sentences, be creative on the spot and even reference previous parts of the conversation like a real person.
It’s not flawless though. It did make mistakes on an arguably simpler task – combining existing lists. It left some items out and was not able to explain why, but given how clever it is we can definitely forgive that!
The core mechanic
I started by giving the chat a one sentence background on our game plot. I had to omit some details (of course) and really condense what is the core mechanic. In seconds ChatGPT was able to give me a list.
Of course, the answers you get can only be as good as the question you ask. My question really didn’t do the plot justice, so I refined it various times and asked again. Here’s one of the refinements:
We’re starting to get some good suggestions.
More aspects of our game
One of the biggest aspects to our game is leadership. Forming relationships with the NPCs and leading them is important. As is being able to tell your own story – your character has no background except what you give. They are not the chosen one, they haven’t inherited from a strong bloodline, they are as ordinary as can be and leadership is not ingrained.
I want our title to convey that, at least a little. So I refined again:
More good suggestions, but we aren’t there yet. However, as I continued to ‘refine’ my question, the names began getting further from what we desired:
Asking for interesting words
In order to better direct my prompts, I decided to sidetrack and ask ChatGPT for some interesting words to use. Here’s how part of that conversation went:
At this point ChatGPT stopped responding for some unknown error and I had to pick up the thread in a new conversation, with various other questions/prompts on new tangents:
Impressive ChatGPT capabilities
At this point I found myself impressed by ChatGPT again. This time the cool feature was the ability for ChatGPT to reference across different chats!
It turns out though, that one thing ChatGPT cannot do, is export the entire chat nicely (I asked). We are limited to copy-paste and screenshots, but at least we are allowed to share the chats (I also asked).
I must say, it’s really really nice being able to directly ask a service what it’s relevant policies are, rather than go digging though another part of the site.
Compiling Results
After a lot more questions and refinements not included here, I asked ChatGPT to combine multiple lists and then sort them alphabetically. This is the only place I faced problems.
I had already combined previous lists into a list now totaling 70 entries. I asked it to add that list with three more lists containing 10 elements each and ended up with… 90 entries. Somehow we lost 10.
I asked it to do the sorting before I noticed this though – and after sorting I ended up with 79 elements. What was going on?
I tried asking directly. ChatGPT apologized and tried to start again, but then it just typed out the same list
It also did not allow me to clean up the chat before I continued… well actually it said I could, but it did nothing…
Summary List
So that was my ChatGPT experience, largely a positive one, although I had to manually go through the list to find as many of the missing entries as I could, after sorting them and to remove some obviously illegal ones like using the prefix ‘Age of Empires’. This is what we ended up with:
